Nouveau Lands A OpenGL 4.3 Feature & Fixes MPEG4 Video Decoding

As explained by the OpenGL.org registry, "This extension allows a texture's data store to be 'viewed' in multiple ways, either reinterpreting the data format/type as a different format/type with the same element size, or by clamping the mipmap level range or array slice range. The goals of this extension are to avoid having these alternate views become shared mutable containers of shared mutable objects, and to add the views to the API in a minimally invasive way."

Wayland/Weston 1.6 RC2 Released

The final release candidate of Wayland 1.6 along with the Weston reference compositor is now available for testing with hopes of officially releasing this quarterly update next week.

Wayland/Weston 1.6 RC2 has bug fixes, command-line argument parsing improvements for Weston, and Weston now depends on the brand new libinput 0.6 back-end. Libinput 0.6 details can be found via the release announcement.

The Wayland/Weston 1.6 RC2 announcement is on Wayland-devel. The plan right now is to do the official 1.6 release next week Friday, 19 September, as long as no major issues crop up prior to that date.

X.Org Server 1.16 Lands Officially In Ubuntu 14.10

After writing earlier this week about a new AMD Catalyst driver paving the way for X Server 1.16 in Ubuntu 14.10, the updated packages have officially landed within the Ubuntu 14.10 "Utopic Unicorn" archive.

The updated AMD Catalyst driver has xorg-server 1.16 ABI compatibility, which for weeks was blocking X.Org Server from being updated in Ubuntu to avoid forcing users to run the open-source AMD driver, etc. Now that AMD sent over this updated driver that has yet to be publicly launched on AMD.com, Canonical went ahead and pushed down the X.Org Server 1.16 update and the updated DDX input/video drivers with compatibility for the new server. Those packages are now in the official Ubuntu 14.10 "Utopic" package archive for anyone doing daily testing of the distribution.

Intel Haswell-ULT Graphics Don't Change Much With Linux 3.17, Mesa 10.4

The Linux 3.17 kernel that's currently under development does provide many new features overall but for those using the Intel HD Graphics of Haswell-ULT chips, there doesn't appear to be much in the way of any performance improvements and at least no regressions. Likewise, Mesa 10.4 isn't doing too much for the Haswell hardware on the matter of frame-rates.

While we routinely carry out Ultra HD (4K) Linux graphics/gaming benchmarks at Phoronix, it's generally been conducted with the proprietary NVIDIA and AMD graphics drivers since the open-source drivers traditionally have had a challenge on performance even at 1080p. However, thanks to the maturing open-source Radeon driver stack, it's possible with higher-end AMD graphics processors with the latest open-source Linux driver code to begin running at the 4K UHD resolution of 3840 x 2160.

Radeon DRM With Linux 3.18 To Support Concurrent Buffer Reads

Another Radeon DRM driver update pull request has been submitted to drm-next for merging in the Linux 3.18 kernel.

Queued up so far for the Radeon DRM graphics driver in Linux 3.18 includes Userptr support and other changes that include R6xx UVD video decoding support, reset rework handling prep, and other minor changes.

Catalyst For X.Org Server 1.16 Readied, Updates In Ubuntu 14.10

Two months after the release of X.Org Server 1.16, AMD finally has readied a Catalyst Linux driver update that is compatible with the latest xorg-server ABI. This driver is being sent into the Ubuntu 14.10 archive and thus allowing the entire Linux graphics stack in Ubuntu 14.10 to finally be updated.

Sent into utopic-proposed on Tuesday was a new fglrx driver version. The new fglrx driver is labeled 14.201-0ubuntu1 as a new upstream Catalyst/fglrx release. While there is no full change-log for this driver, the Ubuntu change-log notes that the driver is compatible with xorg-video-abi-18 as the Application Binary Interface requirements for X.Org Server 1.16.

GCC 4.9 vs. LLVM Clang 3.5 On Intel's Haswell-E Platform Under Linux

With my Intel Core i7 5960X Haswell-E Linux review out there, one of the quick to be requested extra tests is benchmarking the i7-5960X 16-thread processor with LLVM/Clang against GCC. Here's some initial data comparing the compilers for this $1000+ processor.

From the Core i7 5960X system with Gigabyte X99-UD4-CF motherboard, 16GB DDR4 memory, and 128GB SSD, Ubuntu 14.10 was running on the system with its stock Linux 3.16 kernel. For this quick, one-page testing of the i7-5960X compilers I used the packaged GCC 4.9.1 amnd LLVM Clang 3.5.0 compilers found within the Ubuntu 14.10 package archive.

Nexus 5 2014 with Android Lion leaked in benchmark test

Is Android L going to be called Lion? We’ve no certainty of that and the following information should be taken with a grain of salt, but supposedly, Google might choose Lion as the identifier for the new Android OS. Lemon Meringue Pie and Lollipop might also be among the names Google is pondering upon, but we don’t know which is the one that will stick.
The Nexus 5 2014 was listed in the leak with a 5.2 inch Quad HD display, Snapdragon 805 clocked at 2.7 GHz, 3 GB RAM, 32 GB internal storage, a 12 MP rear and 2 MP front camera. So far, these are mildly impressing specs, the best feature of the Nexus 5 2014 being its Snapdragon 805 CPU. This device might also be the one we’ve been hyping about so much, dubbed Nexus 6, Shamu or even Nexus X, but it might as well be a wholly different device.

  • Intel Preps For Discrete Graphics Cards With Linux Patches
    Intel has confirmed that recent patches to its Linux graphics driver were related to its continued work on preparing the ecosystem for its new line of discrete graphics cards. Phoronix reported that Intel released 42 such patches with more than 4,000 lines of code between them on February 14. The main purpose of the patches was to introduce the concept of memory regions in "preparation for upcoming devices with device local memory." (Such as, you know, discrete graphics cards.) [...] Still, any information about Intel's graphics plans is welcome. Right now the graphics market is dominated by AMD and Nvidia, and as we noted in December, Intel is probably the only company that even has a possibility of successfully introducing a new discrete graphics architecture. Why not enjoy the occasional glimpse behind the curtain as that architecture's being built?
  • SVT-VP9 Is Intel's Latest Open-Source Video Encoder Yielding High Performance VP9
    At the start of the month Intel open-sourced SVT-AV1 aiming for high-performance AV1 video encoding on CPUs. That complemented their existing SVT-HEVC encoder for H.265 content and already SVT-AV1 has been seeing nice performance improvements. Intel now has released SVT-VP9 as a speedy open-source VP9 video encoder. Uploaded on Friday was the initial public open-source commit of SVT-VP9, the Intel Scalable Video Technology VP9 encoder. With this encoder they are focusing on being able to provide real-time encoding of up to two 4Kp60 streams on an Intel Xeon Gold 6140 processor. SVT-VP9 is under a BSD-style license and currently runs on Windows and Linux.

How I got my job in Linux: from Newbie to Pro

I was peeved, because I’d spent my own money on building a computer and buying Microsoft Windows to put on it. Money that I really needed to pay the rent and put food in my belly. I also felt sorry for all the people that I’d end up re-installing Windows on their PC to fix their problem. I knew that most of them would probably be back in the store six or so months later with the same complaint. Almost by accident, I found Linux. I was in the magazine section of the PC shop I worked in one day in late 1999. I saw a magazine called ‘Linux Answers’. On the cover was a copy of Red Hat Linux 6.0. Before long, I had done the unthinkable: I had deleted Windows in a rage of fury because it had completely crashed and wouldn’t start up. All of my MP3s, photos and documents, all but gone save for a few backups on CDs I had lying around. Back in those days I had no idea that I would have been able to salvage those files with Linux; I just blithely reformatted my hard disk and went cold-turkey, believing everything that the magazine said, I forced myself into the abyss of the unknown! These were exciting times! I remember the blue text-mode installer, the glare of the many lines of text flying by when the machine started up for the first time. It looked really un-user friendly. Eventually, the screen flipped into what I’d later know to be called ‘runlevel 5’ and I could see a graphical login screen. Little did I know it, but that flashing cursor was the beginning to a whole new world of computing for me. Read more
