Norbert Preining: Switching from KDE/Plasma to Gnome3 for one week

Honestly, I can’t agree more. I have tried Gnome3 for over a year, again and again, and it feels like a block of concrete put onto the feet of dissidents by Italian mafia bosses. It drowns and kills you.

KDE
Software

The updates to KDE apps released today are many, contain a wide array of changes, and cover an impressive number of applications.

Dolphin, KDE's file explorer, for example, adds previews for more types of files and improvements to the way long names are summarized, allowing you to better see what each file is or does. Dolphin also improves the way you can reach files and directories on remote machines, making working from home a much smoother experience. It also remembers the location you were viewing the last time you closed it, making it easier to pick up from where you left off.

Love Ubuntu but want the latest KDE Plasma? KDE neon now sits atop Ubuntu 20.04

KDE

Merging together a solid Ubuntu 20.04 LTS foundation and the latest KDE Plasma packages, KDE neon has a fresh rebase out for you to try out.

So what exactly is it? Is it another Linux distribution? Well, sort of. Not quite. It's just the long-term supported versions of Ubuntu with the freshest releases of the KDE Plasma desktop environment (plus Qt and other KDE software) stuck on top of it. They said it's for people who want "the latest and greatest from the KDE community but the safety and stability of a Long Term Support release". So unlike Kubuntu, the official Ubuntu KDE distribution variant, you're not stuck to the main version of Plasma it launches with.

  • [Krita] SeExpr status update!

It’s been quite a while since my last post. Exams for my teaching certification have not gone as expected – had to pull out after being flattened in quite a critical one…

Buuuut! I am glad to announce that the SeExpr documentation is now available in the Krita manual!

  • Week 9 and 10 : [Krita] GSoC Project Report

Last two weeks I worked on implementing saving and loading of storyboard items and fixed some bugs. For implementing saving and loading I created a copy of the data from the models in KisDocument. That data is kept in sync with the data in models.

Saving and loading of storyboard items are working now. You can save a krita document with storyboards in it and the storyboard data will be saved. Thumbnails are not saved into the .kra file but are loaded using the frame number when the document is loaded. Other than that all data related to the storyboard such as scene name, comments, duration are saved. Since the data is in KisDocument we will have storyboards for each of the .kra files.

Cosmo Communicator Review: the dual boot pocket PC phone

Debian

Around the turn of the century, smartphones came in many clever and innovative shapes and sizes. For about 10 years, we lost that innovation to rectangular touch screen slabs, but now some of that innovation is coming back. The Cosmo Communicator is a good example. It’s an Android smartphone with a real physical keyboard, a clam-shell hinge to open it up, and an external screen. It even allows you to partition the storage area and install full Linux for a dual boot experience.

The Cosmo Communicator is 171.4mm long, 79.3mm wide, and 17.3mm thick. It’s not a small device. The weight is 326g, so it’s not light either. It’s got a 4220mAh battery with fast charging, 5.99″ FHD 2160×1080 pixel main display, 1.91″ external OLED touch display, 24Mp external camera with LED flash, and 5Mp front-facing video call camera. It supports all of the GSM, CDMA, and 4G LTE radios and is also available in a Verizon version or Japan version for those different frequencies. You’ve got dual nano-SIM card slots and eSIM support as well. It comes with Android 9.0 installed, but now with recent updates, we can also install a special version of Debian Linux. Sailfish might work too.

KDE neon Rebased on 20.04

KDE

KDE neon is our installable Linux with continuous integration and deployment. It’s based on Ubuntu who had a new Long Term Support Release recently so we’ve rebased it on Ubuntu 20.04 now.

You should see a popup on your install in the next day or so. It’ll ask you to make sure your system is up to date then it’ll upgrade the base to 20.04 which takes a while to download and then another while to install.

Afterwards it should look just the same because it’s the same wonderful Plasma desktop.
