Xgl and Compiz bling for Dapper
By now, if you haven't seen Compiz and Xgl in action, you probably have heard of it. You may even be wanting to set it up yourself. If so, this guide is here for you.
But fist, some warnings with regards to things that can go wrong. If you are not comfortable, or at least won't cry at the sight of a broken X server, you probably should wait a little while or get an experienced member of the Linux community to give you a hand. There are plenty on freenode -- just log in with your favourite IRC client and ask for help. Before we get into the real meat and potatoes of this guide we will need to verify that all the required hardware, drivers and backups are in place. Here is a simple checklist:
Hardware Requirements:
- a Nvidia GeForce 3 series or newer video card; or
- an ATI card, 7500 series or newer.
Drivers:
- Nvidia proprietary drivers for Nvidia owners with working glx; or
- ATI fglrx proprietary drivers for ATI owners with working glx.
Operating system:
- Ubuntu 6.06, fully up to date;
- 64-bit users may experience issues and should seek supervision during install.
