Nokia 770 to get phone capabilities
Nokia surprised many commentators last year by releasing a mobile device that did not have any phone capabilities. However, recently released software means the 770 internet tablet can now be used as a phone after all.
The tablet is an 802.11b/g Wi-Fi-connected Linux computer, intended for browsing the web. It’s popular among high-end users who like to use it as an open platform to work with.
The latest version of the operating system, Internet Tablet OS 2006, includes support for VoIP (voice over IP) and the SIP protocol, so the device should be useable as a phone - at Wi-Fi hotspots.
