Yes, it is true! id software released updates to Quake3, RTCW and RTCW:ET to fix some security issues discovered in Quake III Arena source code under GPL.
The released zips hold binaries for all supported operating systems. You need to upgrade to the latest through the usual installers first, and replace the engine binaries with the newer ones.
