Whoops! The pain of Linux......
Okay so finally after taking some advice from Mr Duff*, I have asked my new desktop to come prebuilt as Linux. After a good few hours and still no sign of a working window manager I am beginning to regret this.
In theory all I want is to start KDE and point at things with my mouse; but apparently with Linux this still required lots of people standing around my desk and editing of arcane configuration scripts.
But:
*The reasoning is that our internal source control system is much much faster under Linux rather than Windows. My new machine you will hopefully be able to build the entire stack in 35 minutes which is not too shabby.
