first ticket

Just talk

I just got my first traffic ticket in years and years. It's been so long that I can't even remember. I do seem to remember a speeding ticket back in the 90's, but I could go to a "traffic school" so it wouldn't end up on my permanent record and make my insurance go up.

But I got pulled over today for not wearing a seat belt. I hate being told that I have to wear a seat belt. I never wear a seat belt. Well, I do in my Mom's car cause she makes me with the excuse of making her insurance go up. But I've never worn one. When I started driving there was no law for it. Then they go and nanny/police-state us. I contend it's my God given right to risk my own neck. It doesn't endanger anyone else on the road. I do put my grandkids in their carseats and I always made my minor children put their seatbelts on because I do believe they can save lives or minimize injury in the case of an accident, especially for those not behind the wheel.

But I shouldn't have to put one on if I don't wanna. I don't believe I should have to wear a helmet on a motorcycle, bicycle, or skateboard either. It's my right to be stupid or careless if I want.

Even the officer said he thinks it's a violation of The Constitution, but he said he has to obey the law and do his job.

But he assured me that it wouldn't make my car insurance go up. I hope not.

re: Ticket

I feel your pain.

I just got a ticket a few weeks ago for not using my turn signal. I was coming home after a late night lab session, and turned onto the road that leads back to our house without using my turn signal. All of a sudden the night lights up like the scene in Close Encounters and I'm getting pulled over by a state boy. The fact that it was almost 4am, and the only two cars for 10 miles or so was mine and his had no effect on his "making the world safer" speech. $95 bucks and three freaking points on my license. I thought about fighting it in court, but a lawyer friend said it was a waste of time - the court doesn't care about logic, only about whatever arbitrary rules are set forth by the State (and the Insurance Lobbyists who cash in on crap like this).

C'est la vie

But you can bet if there's a zombie apocalypse, we're not letting ANY politicians or police idiots hole up with us.

Re: Seat Belt Ticket

Susan,
Two thoughts about regarding choice of not using a seat belt. I support your choice to not wear a seat belt, but, your car insurance should potentially increase, however, there should be no fine:

1. You *should* have to pay a higher premium than other folks for your auto insurance. I don't want your choice to not wear a seat belt impact my insurance rates, if I do choose to use a seat belt. So a seat-belt ticket should not mean a government/police fine--it should only be reported to your car insurance company for a potential rate increase (that is, a seat-belt ticket should place you into a higher-cost insurance group).

2. Non seat belt users must agree to use a seat-belt if they are passengers and the driver requests such.

My last ticket (several years ago) was a seat belt violation.

Unless you normally work nights, if you're working until nearly 4AM--you're probably working too hard. I would have fought the ticket anyway (I'm retired, so I have the time).

belted

Sorry, Susan...a vote here for belts! Yes, it is about your freedom, but while I was a volunteer firefighter and EMT I saw many times the differences between wearing a seat belt or not, from comparisons within the same accident. So, it is about you...and you thinking about those in the rescue unit coming out on their time to treat you. With a seat belt, it is easier on them...and you!

Seat Belt Ticket

A lot of cities large and small are going through some serious budget crisis and have started ticketing for everything to fill in the gaps left by the loss of Federal funding.

  • How To Install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9 - idroot

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9. For those of you who didn’t know, MongoDB is a high-performance, highly scalable document-oriented NoSQL database. Unlike in SQL databases where data is stored in rows and columns inside tables, in MongoDB, data is structured in JSON-like format inside records which are referred to as documents. The open-source attribute of MongoDB as a database software makes it an ideal candidate for almost any database-related project. This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of the MongoDB NoSQL database on AlmaLinux 9. You can follow the same instructions for CentOS and Rocky Linux.

  • Self-host a Ghost Blog With Traefik

Ghost is a very popular open-source content management system. Started as an alternative to WordPress and it went on to become an alternative to Substack by focusing on membership and newsletter. The creators of Ghost offer managed Pro hosting but it may not fit everyone's budget. Alternatively, you can self-host it on your own cloud servers. On Linux handbook, we already have a guide on deploying Ghost with Docker in a reverse proxy setup. Instead of Ngnix reverse proxy, you can also use another software called Traefik with Docker. It is a popular open-source cloud-native application proxy, API Gateway, Edge-router, and more. I use Traefik to secure my websites using an SSL certificate obtained from Let's Encrypt. Once deployed, Traefik can automatically manage your certificates and their renewals. In this tutorial, I'll share the necessary steps for deploying a Ghost blog with Docker and Traefik.
