As expected, following Release Candidate 3 about 10 days ago, the final release of SimplyMEPIS 11 is now available. This is a first-class, high-quality Linux distribution; it is all too easy to say "if you don't like Ubuntu Natty" give it a try, but the truth is that SimplyMEPIS is an excellent distribution in its own right, it doesn't require a negative comparison to any other distribution to justify trying it.
What I really want to focus on here, though, in response to a number of requests, is using SimplyMEPIS on netbook systems, and very briefly how I get "from here to there". After installing SimplyMEPIS you will get the standard MEPIS/KDE desktop - although it is KDE 4.5.1, MEPIS still presents a default desktop which looks more like KDE 3.5 than 4.x. On netbook systems I prefer the KDE Netbook desktop, which looks like this:
