From windows to Linux. Was there a choice?
Ever since windows came out, until Linux and it's brethren came along, there has really been no other choice of operating system. Before you get your knickers in a knot and start spouting off the multitude of operating systems that were available at that time, let me explain.
When windows 95 burst on the scene that was pretty much it for any operating system which could compete and microsoft gained a monopoly on the X86 architecture hardware. Like today, there were several operating systems which could run on that architecture but they were and are out of reach of the average office computer user.
Then a movement started growing (and I don't mean last nights dinner), a new operating system started gaining steam. Linux was born and in a very short time was capturing a large amount of mind share, if not hardware installations. People started realising that they now have a choice of operating systems which they could use.
Just having an operating system is not good enough.
