EU Threatens Microsoft With $2.4 Million Daily Fine
The European Union threatened to fine Microsoft Corp., the world's largest software maker, as much as 2 million euros ($2.4 million) a day for failing to comply with a 2004 antitrust order.
The European Commission in Brussels will impose fines unless Microsoft supplies ``complete and accurate'' information on its Windows operating system to competitors, the regulator said in a statement today. Microsoft called the statement ``unjustified.''
The warning illustrates the tension between European regulators and Microsoft, whose software runs more than 90 percent of the world's personal computers. Competitors and the EU have said the software maker is resisting complying with the order to license so-called network protocols, which would allow developers to make rival file- and printer-sharing products.
