Enterprise Unix Roundup: What's Driving Mandriva?
Even before you open the door, you can sometimes tell how urgent the person on the other side wants to talk to you. A quiet knock is polite, well-mannered. A harder knock communicates more of a desire to hurry up, let's get this open so we can talk.
Then there's Mandriva. They kicked the door in this week.
Yeah, that's right, we said Mandriva, the French-based Linux distro company that has been a reasonably successful desktop venture, then went in and out of redressement judiciaire (the French equivalent of the United States' Chapter 11 bankruptcy). Afterward, it bought (among other things) Conectiva, the number one Brazilian Linux company and former member of the UnitedLinux consortium.
Today, however, the mechanizations of Mandriva (which sounds like a bad B-movie title) make a lot more sense, thanks to a discussion we had with CEO François Bancilhon this week.
According to Bancilhon, Mandriva is prepared to take its product line straight to the throats of Red Hat and Novell, in whatever arena the U.S. companies care to compete - including, he emphasized, on their own turf.
