It’s now final: Fedora 12 ditches Pidgin for Empathy
There already has been words about Empathy replacing Pidgin as the default IM client in both Ubuntu 9.10 and Fedora 12. We are not sure whether Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic will have it or not but Fedora 12 is going to have Empathy as it’s default IM client for sure. I happened to be checking out the Fedora 12 features list and was not at all surprised to see the inclusion of Empathy as the default IM client in Fedora 12. This feature is also listed as 100% complete. So Empathy is now sure to be as the default IM client in Fedora.
Empathy supports various protocols like MSN and XMPP including Google Talk and Fedora Talk.

Why ditch Pidgin
Why are distros ditching Pidgin? Is it no good anymore?
re: pidgin
who knows, probably cuz it works.
seriously, empathy won't connect for me. granted I've only tried in a coupla distros, but it always says connection error. Then I fire up pidgin and input the same info and connect right on up.
most consensus seems to be cause empathy uses telepathy which supposedly does or will make video chatting easier to accomplish. and is said would allow better desktop integration and the sharing of libraries across apps.
right
right - the fact that it's part of a framework which more easily integrates into the wider desktop is one of the more important reasons.

Re: Why ditch Pidgin
I wouldn't doubt it if it were because Pidgin sucks for using the MSN protocol. Most people I know who've tried Pidgin at some point, but then shifted to something else, cite that as the reason. The problem exists both in Linux and Windows. Perhaps Empathy has no such issue (I've never used it, so I can't speak from experience).
Aside from the MSN issue, I'm a fan of Pidgin. But it's very, very frustrating when 10 minutes after sending a message, it bounces back.
re: Pidgin
Probably because *gasp* Pidgin supports Windows.
