Dell Adds Ubuntu Option to Mini 10; Promises 2 GB RAM
Dell has added Ubuntu as an option to its Inspiron Mini 10 netbook, a Dell spokeswoman wrote in a blog post this week. Also on Dell's to-do list: a 2-Gbyte RAM option, and an ATSC TV tuner.
The Ubuntu option provides an alternative to Windows XP, which Dell provides as the standard option. Dell's main Mini 10 page calls out the "Configure with Ubuntu" alternative.
Although netbooks were originally designed with Linux in mind, users indicated that they preferred Windows XP, at least as evidenced by Microsoft's own revenues. But the Linux option also allows OEMs like Dell to customize the look and feel of the interface.
"We've been tweaking the Dell-designed user interface on the Linux version of the Mini 10," Dell spokeswoman Anne Camden wrote.
