Kongoni 1.12.2-alpha (Sophocles) released
The Kongoni GNU/Linux project is proud to announce the availability of an alpha release of version 1.12.2. The release is named Sophocles after the philosopher often referred to as the father of modern thought as it represents the first release that is really uniquely kongoni.
At heart, Kongoni is a desktop focused GNU/Linux distribution with significant inspiration from the BSD-Unix systems. The system is based on slackware 12.2 with the latest upstream patches and also features KDE 4.2.2 as well as the latest stable releases of most common desktop applications such as OpenOffice.org. Like it's BSD ideological ancestors Kongoni does not provide add-on software as binary packages but rather as ports. This means the system contains an automated tool that fetches the source code for requested programs (including dependencies) then compiles it locally and builds a package which gets installed.
This release includes the first versions of several kongoni specific tools including P.I.G (Ports Installation GUI) which provides a simple graphical tool for installing, managing and even creating software ports and K.I.S.S. The Kongoni Instant Setup System which provides a simple and highly extensible interface for common configuration tasks. The installer has had several notable improvements, making it not only easier to use but also more stable and flexible with support added for installing on ReiserFS file-systems (ext4 support is planned for a future release).
Some of the most visible changes are in the artwork and themeing. Our arts-team has been hard at work and Sophocles is now completely themed with our African sunsets colour-schemes and associated wallpapers and other artwork. This release is still at alpha status and not ready for production use, but it should be adequate for anybody to test and play with, we do expect there to be bugs and would like to put out a request to those who try it to keep an eye out and report bugs they find on our forums at http://www.kongoni.co.za so that we can fix them in the next release.
For those who already have the Aristotle release, it is now possible to do a complete rolling upgrade to Sophocles by following the steps in the howto here: http://kongoni.co.za/guides/users-guides/kongoni-upgrade-howto-sophocles
Kongoni can be downloaded as an ISO image which can be burned to a disk to create a live CD. The same images can also be used to create live USB sticks which can be booted and installed just like the live CD's. The same boot-from-USB setup has also been successfully tested on numerous netbooks including the ASUS eeePC. Kongoni has native versions for either 32-bit or 64-bit CPU's and the 64-bit version has support for 32-bit emulation included for running 32-bit only programs.
