The 2008 State of My Linux Address
Hooray! This is the one-year anniversary of my adoption of Ubuntu! And that’s a good as an excuse as any for me to indulge in a bit of reflection and pontification.
Two of the first posts I made on this blog addressed why I decided to get rid of Microsoft Windows and why I chose Ubuntu. Without repeating all the details, it boiled down to:
1. I couldn’t, in good conscience, continue to use and support Microsoft - especially not personally.
2. I wanted to recapture the excitement I used to have about computers.
Embracing Freedom
One thing that excites me is the idea of spreading freedom. Of promoting freedom. This is why I like the GPL and the FSF, and arguments like “The GPL is viral”, or “The GPL isn’t Free because it doesn’t allow me to steal the code” don’t gain any ground with me. I care about personal and societal freedom, and the idea behind Free Software is all about being free-as-in-speech “free” - something too often lost on newcomers, perhaps because there are some Open Source people that not only de-emphasize the “FL” of FLOSS, but occasionally mock or even attack it.
