Coherence brings UPnP to GNOME
Coherence is a Python library that implements UPnP and the Digital Living Network Alliance standard, protocols that facilitate interoperability between networked media devices. The developers have used Coherence to build plugins for several popular GNOME applications.
The Coherence Nautilus extension—which was committed to version control last month and is not yet included in the official packages—allows users to share individual folders over UPnP, upload files to UPnP media servers, and stream files to UPnP media renderers. It was made using the Nautilus Python bindings, which we wrote about extensively last week. There is also a Coherence plugin for Totem, which provides access to content from UPnP media servers through a simple sidebar user interface, and a plugin for Rhythmbox that makes the player accessible to the network as a UPnP media server.
