Have hackers recruited your PC?
BBC news has posted an article relating a study "by security researchers who have spent months tracking more than 100 networks of remotely-controlled machines. They discovered 'bot nets [were]used to launch 226 distributed denial-of-service attacks on 99 separate targets.'"
Although most if not all the machines taken over were running some form of M$ Windows, the attacks had long reaching arms that could affect many innocent users. Some examples include using 'bot nets for mass identity theft, to host websites that look like those of banks so confidential information can be gathered and to peep into online traffic to steal sensitive data.'
They also mention bot nets were used to abuse the Google Adsense program that rewards websites for displaying adverts from the search engine. Some networks were used to abuse or manipulate online polls and games. Included in the results were numerous DDos attacks designed to take competitors offline.
That BBC article.
