Reiser's future now in hands of jury
The fate of 44-year-old computer engineer Hans Reiser, who is accused of murdering his wife, now rests with the jury. The prosecution finished its rebuttal in the closing arguments to his trial Monday morning.
Alameda County Deputy District Attorney Paul Hora - using puzzle pieces to illustrate the evidence against Reiser - asked jurors for a final time to convict Reiser of either first- or second-degree murder.
"I can give you one single reason for all this evidence," Hora told the jurors. "He murdered her. That explains the entire puzzle."
Hora systematically went through the mounds of circumstantial evidence in the case - from Reiser ripping out his car seat after his wife disappeared to him making no attempts to find her.
Hora asked the jury to come back with a murder conviction, but if they can't decide on first- or second -degree murder, at least come back with a second-degree verdict. Hora said the worst thing that could happen in this case is to come back with no verdict.
"Without a verdict, there is no justice," Hora said.
