It was my pleasure to donate a bit of time to a new computer user group last week.
It was a small group of folks, about 25…their ages ranging from 66 to 102. Yes, let me spell that; one hundred and two years old.
It was my sincere pleasure to talk with these fine people about their computers and we warmed to one another quickly. In fact, after 5 minutes, I pushed the podium aside and walked among the participants as I spoke. I did not feel worthy to stand behind a symbol of authority. These people have lived through amazing and terrifying times. Who was I to pretend to be an authority on anything? It only took a few minutes to realize what the topic of the morning would be.
Spyware. Viruses. Phishing. Windows XP.
Alice Kennington has seen our nation go from horse and buggy to robot buggies on Mars. The invention and use of a computer is just a blip on her experience-O-meter. Alice uses her computer daily to check her stocks and email her Kids, Grandkids, Great Grandkids and someone named “puppyboy”.
Another, an 81 year old Great GrandMother had to witness an explicit animated gif image of oral sex being performed until she could get the page switched to a bookmarked site. She was so embarassed she cried when she had to tell me what the problem was.
So did I install Linux on any machines?
