Big 2008 release from Mandriva
Desktop Linux distribution Mandriva 2008 was also released last week after six months of development and testing. Changes in this release are many but the main ones are the inclusion of KDE 3.5.7, the new GNOME 2.20, version 126.96.36.199 of the Linux kernel with fair scheduling support, OpenOffice.org 2.2.1, a 3D-accelerated desktop courtesy of Compiz Fusion 0.5.2 and Mozilla Firefox 188.8.131.52. Hardware compatibility also got a big boost this time around, good news for those that struggled to get everything to work in previous releases.
Ubuntu gets Gutsy
The Ubuntu development team last week Ubuntu 7.10) ahead of this week's (October 18) full release of this popular distribution. Desktop highlights in this release include: Compiz Fusion; greatly improved printer installation in Gnome; free Flash support with a development release of Gnash; and automated Firefox plugin installation.
