Local open-source provider thrives
The world's largest provider of Linux-based open-source software is based in Raleigh and has a workforce that draws heavily from the Triangle's technology-savvy workforce.
Red Hat Inc., which has been a major player in the open-source software movement since its founding in 1993, posted its second-quarter net income this week of $18.2 million, up 64 percent from the same period last year.
Rick Skarbez, president of the Computer Science Students Association at UNC, said the Triangle has been a breeding ground for open-source-minded companies ever since the movement started in the late '80s.
"It's a fertile area for technology," he said. "There are players in the open-source community."
Red Hat is one of two area touchstones that laid the foundation for modern-day open-source organizations, said Doug Whitfield, co-president of the Carolina Open Source Initiative.
The other is the nonprofit, UNC-run ibiblio.org, an extensive online library and digital archive. "They're the kind of poster child of open source," Whitfield said.
