Taking the Open Road: University Libraries Explore Options
University libraries are natural users of open source software, which offers a good fit with open access to information and collaborative working. Open source solutions are beginning to encroach on learning and library operations, more often than not without the say-so of the librarians.
According to research by OSSWatch, which advises institutions on open source options, 77 percent of colleges and universities say they regularly explore open source options in procurement exercises, but only 25 percent mention open source in their institutional policies. Many open source solutions arrive in institutions by the back door, implemented by an enthusiastic techie, which has raised concerns about sustainability and support.
Open source learning management system Moodle alone is now used in 56 percent of universities since its introduction three years ago, and the Open University has moved over to it wholesale. Supporters say open source LMS tend to be more modular and make it much easier for libraries to contribute content than is the case with commercial solutions.
