The future of Windows should be open source

Microsoft

In a recent interview with Microsoft's COO Kevin Turner, the executive was asked about the future of Windows. In response, Turner had this to say: "Certainly, this last year has been an unprecedented year for Vista and Office and the launch," Turner said. "And we are still committed to the desktop. There will be another release and launch of a Vista-type operating system. [And] there will be another release of Office."

In typical Microsoft fashion, he continued: "You don't want this audience to abandon Windows, so it's important to remind them that Windows is still the most interesting operating system to develop for."

If I were to judge the future of Microsoft based on these two statements, we should look for another version of Windows in about five years. And while I agree there should be another version of Windows and Office, I will disagree with the business model. Forget about paying a couple hundred dollars for an operating system that is riddled with problems, the next version of Windows should be open source!

Wow, did I just say that?

re: future of windows

This guys article is a perfect example of why the mentally challenged should not be allowed to write tech articles.

Amazing how anyone can be so clueless to think that they've "out thunk" the hundreds of PhD's that staff Microsoft's steering division.

I'd love for this guy to show up to a MS stock holders meeting with his brilliant ideas - I've always been curious (in a purely theoretical manner) about how many pieces the human body can be torn into before it's re-classified as goop.

Hopefully his next article will be something more practical - like why Saudi Aramco would get richer by giving their product away for free.

re: future of windows

Attacking someone's person can hardly demonstrate his claims are wrong.

By the way there are many MS supporters that feel like if MS has shot his own foot publishing vista. You just have to visit forums around the web to convince yourself.

You don't need to ask MS stock holders, that is dumb.

What planet do you live on?

Microsoft exists ONLY to make it's stock holders money.

As opposed to existing to make PCs usable. I rest my case.

MS and Opensource...Not gonna happen.

Why? Because the fundamental business model of Microsoft is in direct contradiction to the concept of opensource. It won't work. Period.

MS will NEVER release the code to Windows or MS Office. Both solutions are their big money makers (at least 40% of their annual $$$$ they bring in).

They're a business. They have shareholders. They need to make money. For them to turn into an opensource company would require them to re-vamp themselves from the ground up. This is next to impossible for MS. That's fact.

re: The future of Windows

i thought vista was the last of the windows series? i guess i was wrong, but i'd encourage microsoft to release windows' source-code with the last version, but that, of course, would never happen, being the greedy corporate asshole that they are!

Samsung, Red Hat to Work on Linux Drivers for Future Tech

The metaverse is expected to uproot system design as we know it, and Samsung is one of many hardware vendors re-imagining data center infrastructure in preparation for a parallel 3D world. Samsung is working on new memory technologies that provide faster bandwidth inside hardware for data to travel between CPUs, storage and other computing resources. The company also announced it was partnering with Red Hat to ensure these technologies have Linux compatibility. Read more

  • How to install go1.19beta on Ubuntu 22.04 – NextGenTips

In this tutorial, we are going to explore how to install go on Ubuntu 22.04 Golang is an open-source programming language that is easy to learn and use. It is built-in concurrency and has a robust standard library. It is reliable, builds fast, and efficient software that scales fast. Its concurrency mechanisms make it easy to write programs that get the most out of multicore and networked machines, while its novel-type systems enable flexible and modular program constructions. Go compiles quickly to machine code and has the convenience of garbage collection and the power of run-time reflection. • How To Install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9 - idroot

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9. For those of you who didn’t know, MongoDB is a high-performance, highly scalable document-oriented NoSQL database. Unlike in SQL databases where data is stored in rows and columns inside tables, in MongoDB, data is structured in JSON-like format inside records which are referred to as documents. The open-source attribute of MongoDB as a database software makes it an ideal candidate for almost any database-related project. This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of the MongoDB NoSQL database on AlmaLinux 9. You can follow the same instructions for CentOS and Rocky Linux.

  • Self-host a Ghost Blog With Traefik

Ghost is a very popular open-source content management system. Started as an alternative to WordPress and it went on to become an alternative to Substack by focusing on membership and newsletter. The creators of Ghost offer managed Pro hosting but it may not fit everyone's budget. Alternatively, you can self-host it on your own cloud servers. On Linux handbook, we already have a guide on deploying Ghost with Docker in a reverse proxy setup. Instead of Ngnix reverse proxy, you can also use another software called Traefik with Docker. It is a popular open-source cloud-native application proxy, API Gateway, Edge-router, and more. I use Traefik to secure my websites using an SSL certificate obtained from Let's Encrypt. Once deployed, Traefik can automatically manage your certificates and their renewals. In this tutorial, I'll share the necessary steps for deploying a Ghost blog with Docker and Traefik.
