Girls get grounding in gigabytes
It is well known to many parents that the only people in the house capable of programming the VCR are their children.
The 30 girls sitting in the Harrington Learning Center at Quinsigamond Community College yesterday were far past VCRs, however. The group of 10- to 14-year-olds was busy installing and configuring the Linux operating system on computers they had finished building.
“I’ve been using a computer for 20 years and you guys know more about this stuff than I do,” said Michael R. Seppala, director of institutional advancement at QCC, as he addressed the group.
The girls are students at QCC’s 2007 Technology Academy for Girls program, which is sponsored by the college, Fred Harris Daniels Foundation, Greater Worcester Community Fund and Intel.
