More useful commands for the Linux Newbie
If you are just starting out with linux, and have no idea how to uncompress a gzip file, or do other simple commands, check this out. It will improve your speed with the Linux operating system.
1.] Compressing / Uncompressing Files:
If you are starting Linux for the first time, you’ll notice that most of the programs that you download from the internet come in a gzip or tar format. I will explain here how to uncompress these files:
To compressing a single file:
gzip file
To decompress it:
gunzip file.gz
To compress a directory:
tar czf aga.tar.gz directory # compressingtar tzf aga.tar.gz # listingtar xf aga.tar directory # uncompressing
.zip files:
zip -r archivename directories filesunzip -l archivenameunzip archivename
2.] Cut’n paste
Cutting & pasting under Linux is not always straightforward.
