Microsoft with the carrot and the stick
There is no doubt about it. Microsoft knows what they are doing. However it seems to me that no-one else, particularly businesses, can see what they are doing. To use a cliche or two Microsoft is using the carrot and stick method to divide and conqueror.
The sad part about it is the open source community is letting them. First Microsoft uses the patent stick to strike fear into the pockets of individuals and companies. Of course many people know and understand and dismiss the FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) that Microsoft is spreading and they get angry and postulate in much the same way I am doing now. Microsoft relies on the law of numbers and they know that for every hundred angry people there will be at least one or two scared people or companies. It is those scared people or companies that Microsoft is counting on and targeting.
