Open source use expanding in mission critical apps
More than half of companies taking advantage of open source in a survey are using it in mission critical applications, stated a new report from Forrester Consulting that was sponsored by Unisys.
"Once open source has been adopted for a range of applications and workloads within a company, it begins to be treated the same way as commercial software rather than as a unique phenomenon," stated Michael Goulde, senior analyst at Forrester.
Also, more than 75 per cent of respondents indicated that support for open standards, the ability to use software without restriction and not having to be locked into a single vendor's product line "were either important or very important attributes of open source."
The research organization spoke to 486 corporate decision-makers who are familiar with open source and have at least had an application evaluated. "
