The Tale of the Accidental Upgrade
An experiment with Linux goes horribly right.
It all started innocently enough.
An old friend here at the office was working late, and I was there working on IT360/Linuxworld. He dropped by my designated work area, and we got to talking about Linux. He was asking (in essence) why I like Linux. The reason he was asking was that he had tried to install SUSE as his first Linux.
I was horrified. I have nothing against SUSE at all, but its installer is still not a first-time-to-Linux level experience. It is better than it used to be, but still meant for people that know what they want up front: at the install. Once it is installed, no problem. Tweaked configured and dialed in, it is fine. At that point, it is Linux, with either a Gnome or KDE desktop more than likely. Not that different from anything else. Centrally building and supporting it? Sure. No problem. Need vendor supported version for Enterprise rollout? Absolutely.
Never installed Linux before... not so good. Not as good as other Linuxii anyway.

Samsung, Red Hat to Work on Linux Drivers for Future TechThe metaverse is expected to uproot system design as we know it, and Samsung is one of many hardware vendors re-imagining data center infrastructure in preparation for a parallel 3D world. Samsung is working on new memory technologies that provide faster bandwidth inside hardware for data to travel between CPUs, storage and other computing resources. The company also announced it was partnering with Red Hat to ensure these technologies have Linux compatibility. |
