"War of the Worlds" took in more than $200 million worldwide in its first four days in release, with foreign grosses slightly larger than domestic box-office.
he Box Office Mojo Web site said the new Tom Cruise-Steven Spielberg sci-fi thriller took in an estimated $101.6 million domestically and $102.5 in overseas markets through Saturday -- for a total of $204.1 million.
"War of the Worlds" -- the latest adaptation of H.G. Wells` classic novel -- took in $21.3 million at the U.S. box office on its opening day Wednesday. It was the biggest opening ever for Cruise, and the biggest first day for any movie in the history of Paramount Pictures, Daily Variety reported.
Nine other movies have had bigger mid-week openings. One was "The Passion of the Christ," and the rest were sequels to relatively recent blockbuster hits.
"Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" took in $50 million when it opened on May 19, a Thursday.
The original movie sets have been added to Universal Studios Hollywood behind-the-scenes Studio Tour.
