the tux500 scam of the Linux community
devnet cracked first.
helios has so far been MIA, but devnet charged in like usual. His site currently has him screaming denials about being involved at all with the tux500 scandal - "nothing! I barely know the guy! what project?" Protests at being lumped in with this project, and suddenly claims he won't have time for it. Mind you, not "We weren't doing anything wrong." Just "Not me, dammit, I was at the movies!"
Which I'd be inclined to say "Leave the guy alone", if I'd had a moment's peace from these two crooks for the past two years while they warp the Linux community with their little games. Just remember folks, if you were INCHES AWAY from $350,000... (that's how crooks think. To them, their Bahamas vacation is as good as booked.) what would you do? How desperate would you be to hang onto it?

Samsung, Red Hat to Work on Linux Drivers for Future TechThe metaverse is expected to uproot system design as we know it, and Samsung is one of many hardware vendors re-imagining data center infrastructure in preparation for a parallel 3D world. Samsung is working on new memory technologies that provide faster bandwidth inside hardware for data to travel between CPUs, storage and other computing resources. The company also announced it was partnering with Red Hat to ensure these technologies have Linux compatibility. |

re: Penguin Pete
The Tux500 plan might be ill-conceived, poorly planned, and woefully lacking in anything that looks like a successful marketing concept - but it's highly unlikely it's a scam.
(only valid point to the whole rant is: what will happen to the money raised when/if they don't make their goal?)
Both Helios and Devnet are too well known in real life to imagine that they could pull such a heist and get away with the money scot-free, and it's not like you're going to relocate and come up with a whole new identity for a measly $350K.
Although I like to butt heads with Helios, even I don't think he's that stupid.
Call it a dumb idea or cheer them on, but you'll need to come up with some real evidence to call it a scam.
Of Course it's Not a Scam
That's the problem with the Blogosphere--in things like this it really comes down to the reputations and what you know about the bloggers. In one corner we have Penguin Pete, and in the other, Helios.
I know Helios is a passionate guy who cares about the success of OSS and Linux. He's worried about DRM and the Microsoftification of the world. He's ultimately worried about our freedom to use and control intelligent devices as we see fit.
This Tux500 plan is consistent with his long stated philosophy and beliefs. Penguin Pete, I don't know at all.
I think I'll send $10 to the Tux500 plan (I can do without Mochas for a few days). For me, it's more a strike against Penguin Pete's smear job than a strong endorsement of the Tux500 Linux promotion plan.
IMHO, Too early to accuse
...Too risky to invest as well. I believe in OLPC, not NASCAR and payments made to advertisers, drivers, and mechanics for 15 minutes of fame. I think that many developers could make better use of the money and help Linux more effectively.
Once again, no comments permitted
Penguin Pete seems intent on a one-way conversation on this matter, as he's closed his comments and even there is blaming the 'scammers'. Oh well, I'll post it here and perhaps he'll see it anyway;
"I certainly hope you are posting this blog from outside the US, because you're asking for a heckuva libel suit here. I certainly don't know your relationship with these two people but your tirade is childish at best. Why not give your venom a rest and try posting something of interest to the linux community?"
BTW, a member of FedoraForum.org has provided us with this link: http://www.motorsport.com/news/article.asp?ID=248407&FS=IRL It seems to give some credence to the project, although I still think there's better ways to invest.
