Back to school - tuXlab reviewed
tuXlabs is a freely distributed educational software package running on a specialised Ubuntu derivative which has been rolled out to schools across South Africa and serves over 160 000 learners. Tectonic has covered various stories on it in the past and it seemed about time to give it a try.
Finding myself in a bit of a distro limbo a the time that I was handed a review copy of tuXlabs, I decided to go to install it fully on to my computer. Although the DVD can be run live, I thought I would immerse myself completely into the environment. So back to school I went.
Installation was remarkably quick and easy, taking a grand total of three clicks before tuXlabs was replacing the previous distro (SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10, reviewed here). I had been told that installation takes only 17 minutes (I have no idea on what speed DVD drive and what processor that would be). Although I didn't time it, after making a cup of coffee, popping outside for a cigarette and having a bit of a chat, I was ready to go.
