Upgrading Ubuntu Dapper to Edgy? I Don't Think So!
I have a real reason to be using Linux these days and so I set up VMWare Server, installed Ubuntu Dapper 6.06 and started installing all the programs I need (Oracle 10g, Java 1.5, NetBeans, Subversion, Tomcat). Then I started updating Firefox with my favorite add-ons and themes. There are now several of both that don't work with Firefox 1.5, so I decided to upgrade Firefox.
Months ago I wrote about how stupid it was that Ubuntu 6.06 didn't have any packages for Firefox 2 in the repositories. Well, it still doesn't have Firefox 2 in the repositories. This is ridiculous. The official line from Ubuntu is to upgrade from Dapper to Edgy; Edgy has Firefox 2 as standard equipment.
Many people have blogged about the process of upgrading and how easy it is, etc. It's supposed to be so easy that you just type a magical command and away it goes:
gksu "update-manager -c -d"
What could be easier?
Apparently self-inflicted root-canal would be easier.
