The scanner, the network and a saned
Nowdays just about everyone has a scanner. Most business that I know and many private homes with several computers have a network running. If those businesses have been running for any length of time or the private homes are technological junkies then there will be at least one old box (I don't mean cardboard ones) lying around.
All you need is the scanner, a network and the saned daemon. You are probably thinking now that you know what a scanner is (duh!) and you know what a network is but you may be confused about the saned daemon. No it is not some previously insane creature from Buffy it is the server part of the sane program. SANE stands for Scanner Access Now Easy and that is exactly what it does. The saned daemon takes any run of the mill scanner (about ninety percent of them by my reckoning) and turns it into a multiuser power machine that saves a lot of time and frustration and allows any linux or windows machine to use the scanner remotely. This is in much the same way as a print job is sent but instead an image is scanned.
To implement this scanner networking solution is very easy. First you need a computer that can be used as the server. It can be a computer that is already in use or an old box that is just gathering dust. In any event it needs to be configured for and connected to the network. With that box running your favourite linux distribution you need to have the sane suit of programs installed.
As my current flavour is kubuntu I will be using that as my example.

Samsung, Red Hat to Work on Linux Drivers for Future TechThe metaverse is expected to uproot system design as we know it, and Samsung is one of many hardware vendors re-imagining data center infrastructure in preparation for a parallel 3D world. Samsung is working on new memory technologies that provide faster bandwidth inside hardware for data to travel between CPUs, storage and other computing resources. The company also announced it was partnering with Red Hat to ensure these technologies have Linux compatibility. |
