How Xgl Works
I explain here how Xgl works with NVIDIA's drivers. It works in a similar way with DRI drivers: Mesa libGL and libglx are loaded instead of NVIDIA's ones. This will have a benefict...
First step: Xglx & Xorg launch
*(Remember we are talking about Xglx)
*Xgl is launched.
*The "Xgl initializing procedure" launches Xorg.
*Xorg loads NVIDIA's X driver (that will not be used).
*Xorg loads NVIDIA's libglx as its X Server Extension for GLX (that I'll call "Underlying GLX Extension").
*Xorg can provide Direct OpenGL Contexts to OpenGL clients.
Second step: requiring the Context
Xgl is linked to NVIDIA's libGL and uses it for its rendering.
Now, Xgl is an OpenGL Client and thus it needs an OpenGL Context.
Xgl: Hello NVIDIA's libGL, I require an OpenGL Context for my rendering.
NVIDIA's libGL: Sure, I'll ask the server.
