If you'd like to look at my Fluxbox Files

Filed under
Linux

Fluxbox is simple and configurable, two things that rarely go together this well. And it's also portable. I've been rewriting these files for six years, and I've run some version of them with fluxbox in maybe a dozen different distros.

I call this configuration Konqbox, because its always been centered on KDE applications, and now it incorporates Plasma Widgets into the mix. KDE filemanagers (and here I'll include the Folder View widget) bring the graphical capabilities of a full-fledged Desktop environment to any window manager, and fluxbox puts that capability under your complete control.

Fluxbox Download links

Zipped up fluxbox files

Installer script for Kubuntu

http://download1048.mediafire.com/vh7loh8rzgqg/1722wp1p0ojhu8o/konqbox.sh

download both files to your home directory, type

sudo sh konqbox.sh

The script should install missing applications from the kubuntu default, save the preexisting fluxbox files, unzip the fluxbox files.

If you don't have kubuntu, you can just unzip the files, overwriting the original fluxbox files.

Testing and documentation will be continuing in the comments.

Restricted: Can't test the script with Kubuntu Live

On a side note I'm finding that because of RESTRICTED REPOSITORIES, I can't run added software onto the Kubuntu live CD, even if I make a startup disk with a persistence file. So I can't test my installer script to make sure it will run on my friend's kubuntu system without installing Kubuntu to my hard drive. I guess I could make a VM.

Restricted Repositories are not good. Among other things, it will make it much harder for people to make custom CDs. I will be posting about this. Am considering the title "Why Kubuntu is Dead to Me" Oh, and you thought you were pissed about Unity!

I'm about to boot an Ubuntu CD to see just how far the problem has extended.

The command is for opening plasma widgets is plasmoidviewer

[exec] (Folder View) {plasmoidviewer folderview}
[exec] (Analog Clock) {plasmoidviewer clock}
[exec] (Pager) {plasmoidviewer pager}
[exec] (weather) {plasmoidviewer yaWP}

To get a list of all widgets and the correct names for the plasmoidvier command, type plasmoidviewer --list into a terminal.

Tips for quick editing and organizing shortcuts in Fluxbox

Fluxbox is configured by editing text files. The configuration files are as easy to understand as any GUI, but there are things to do that make the physical act of typing a lot faster

1. Menu items and keyboard shortcuts that provide instant access:

#Group C: KDE APPLICATIONS
#Ctrl + Alt + Key
Mod1 Control 1 :execCommand
Mod1 Control 2 :execCommand
Mod1 Control 3 :execCommand
Mod1 Control 4 :execCommand
Mod1 Control 5 :execCommand
Mod1 Control 6 :execCommand ksnapshot
Mod1 Control 7 :execCommand konqueror ~/.fluxbox/kickpage/kickpage.html
Mod1 Control 8 :execCommand

My key file is arranged in groups of 36:
a set of modifying keys (e.g. CTRL + ALT) is matched to all 36 alphanumeric keys.

Arranging the keybinding in groups makes it easier to remember a large number of keyboard shortcuts. If you can remember that CTRL + ALT are the modifying keys for KDE applications,

it's easier to remember that CTRL + ALT + W opens Kwrite,

and CTRL + ALT + T opens Ktorrent

Of course, any crazy association is great for remembering key combinations when it's YOUR crazy association. I use

CTRL + ALT + 6

to activate Ksnapshot, the KDE screenshot application, because the ^ at the top of the 6 key looks like a little arrow pointing at the screen.

#KICKBOX KEYBINDINGS
#To make them easier to remember, the default keyboard shortcuts are organized into groups.
#Different modifier keys are assigned to different groups of shortcuts.
#For example, the combination of "Ctrl + Alt", when used in combination with any key (other than F1 through F12)
#is only used to open a KDE application.
#Once you can remember that, the keys can be chosen to be as mnomic as possible.
#For example: "Ctrl + Alt + A" opens Amarok.
# "Ctrl + Alt + W" opens kwrite.
# "Ctrl + Alt + T" opens Ktorrent

Samsung, Red Hat to Work on Linux Drivers for Future Tech

The metaverse is expected to uproot system design as we know it, and Samsung is one of many hardware vendors re-imagining data center infrastructure in preparation for a parallel 3D world. Samsung is working on new memory technologies that provide faster bandwidth inside hardware for data to travel between CPUs, storage and other computing resources. The company also announced it was partnering with Red Hat to ensure these technologies have Linux compatibility. Read more

  • How to install go1.19beta on Ubuntu 22.04 – NextGenTips

    In this tutorial, we are going to explore how to install go on Ubuntu 22.04 Golang is an open-source programming language that is easy to learn and use. It is built-in concurrency and has a robust standard library. It is reliable, builds fast, and efficient software that scales fast. Its concurrency mechanisms make it easy to write programs that get the most out of multicore and networked machines, while its novel-type systems enable flexible and modular program constructions. Go compiles quickly to machine code and has the convenience of garbage collection and the power of run-time reflection. In this guide, we are going to learn how to install golang 1.19beta on Ubuntu 22.04. Go 1.19beta1 is not yet released. There is so much work in progress with all the documentation.

  • How To Install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9 - idroot

    In this tutorial, we will show you how to install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9. For those of you who didn’t know, MongoDB is a high-performance, highly scalable document-oriented NoSQL database. Unlike in SQL databases where data is stored in rows and columns inside tables, in MongoDB, data is structured in JSON-like format inside records which are referred to as documents. The open-source attribute of MongoDB as a database software makes it an ideal candidate for almost any database-related project. This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of the MongoDB NoSQL database on AlmaLinux 9. You can follow the same instructions for CentOS and Rocky Linux.

  • Self-host a Ghost Blog With Traefik

    Ghost is a very popular open-source content management system. Started as an alternative to WordPress and it went on to become an alternative to Substack by focusing on membership and newsletter. The creators of Ghost offer managed Pro hosting but it may not fit everyone's budget. Alternatively, you can self-host it on your own cloud servers. On Linux handbook, we already have a guide on deploying Ghost with Docker in a reverse proxy setup. Instead of Ngnix reverse proxy, you can also use another software called Traefik with Docker. It is a popular open-source cloud-native application proxy, API Gateway, Edge-router, and more. I use Traefik to secure my websites using an SSL certificate obtained from Let's Encrypt. Once deployed, Traefik can automatically manage your certificates and their renewals. In this tutorial, I'll share the necessary steps for deploying a Ghost blog with Docker and Traefik.
