MEPIS updates for a fee? Get over it!
Ace NewsForge reporter Tina Gasperson recently wrote a story about how MEPIS reseller Technalign Inc. has decided "to implement a serial number system for the retail version that will prevent unauthorized users from downloading free updates from Technalign's repository servers."
In short, only paying customers can download patches from Technalign's servers for paying customers. Shocking isn't it?
MEPIS author Warren Woodford then went on to point out that users of the free version can still get patches from the usual Debian file repositories. MEPIS is, after all, a Debian and DCC Alliance Linux distribution.
What happened next?
Well, if you've been following Linux for a while you already know. There was much online groaning about the "non-free nature of the MEPIS distro" and questions about "how this meshes with the GPL."
Please. How many times do we have to go through this nonsense?
