Does free software create a challenge for Linux?
Why is it that most people still have not heard of Linux?
Could it be that one of things that drives many people toward Linux, the fact that it is free as in free beer, is also an impediment to it’s adoption? While the purpose of open source is to be free as in freedom as many of us have already heard, I think that it is great that Linux is also available free of charge. That fact has a lot to do with why I use it. And I don’t think that this should change. But I do think that there are special challenges that the Linux O.S. faces in gaining adoption. Since it is free that leaves many companies to make their money by selling support services. People do not see support services setting in a nice shiny box with slick graphics on the shelves of their local tech stores. They do see boxes on the shelves of Microsoft and Apple operating systems. This means that the task of getting the word out about Linux falls largely in the hands of Linux users, some of whom do not do a very good job of promoting this environment. Can you just imagine the scenario, here comes so and so he is going to taunt me for using Windows on my laptop. Oh no an error message don’t let him or her see this. The Linux user approaches. Oh, lost data you should have been using Linux. We have all been just a little guilty of this. And for some it may be a good way to introduce them to Linux but if an individual is sick of hearing it then discernment is needed when it is time to pretend that we didn’t just see their system crash and burn.
What about the companies that distribute Linux?
