Ubuntu and Mozilla: The inevitable alliance

First lets discuss some of the key players and situations involved in developing such an alliance. First we have Mozilla which showed the world that the browser wars were not over and that Microsoft can be hurt. Second is Ubuntu which showed the world that Linux can be viable, easy and popular desktop operating system. Finally lets look at Google who has been inspired by the previous two achievements mention and are currently working on their own Linux based browser OS called Chromium.

Some call this evolution. I call it swiping the feet out from under your competitors by combining their known strengths and insisting that this is a web based OS only for Netbooks. Which to me is a ploy to keep future competitors from forming alliances now before Chromium OS is truly off the ground.

But right down there are the bottom of the page is some interesting misconceptions about the nature of Google, Canonical and Mozilla. The old chesnut that confuses Ubuntu with Canonical, the former is a community/foundation and the later is a privately held business in the Isle of Man (UK). Mozilla is a Foundation/Charity in the USA and Google is a share held corporation in the USA.

Red Hat Hires a Blind Software Engineer to Improve Accessibility on Linux Desktop

Accessibility on a Linux desktop is not one of the strongest points to highlight. However, GNOME, one of the best desktop environments, has managed to do better comparatively (I think). In a blog post by Christian Fredrik Schaller (Director for Desktop/Graphics, Red Hat), he mentions that they are making serious efforts to improve accessibility. Starting with Red Hat hiring Lukas Tyrychtr, who is a blind software engineer to lead the effort in improving Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and Fedora Workstation in terms of accessibility. Read more
