Ubuntu Linux keeps being buggy... will I go back to XP?

Ubuntu

Well, I did it once, after years of Linux (registered with the Linux Counter on August 26, 1996). Then I went back to… Ubuntu Jaunty, then I switched to CentOS 5.3 and have built my own extra repository Odiecolon.repo, only to end in Xubuntu Karmic, now being on Ubuntu Karmic.

Right now, I am pissed off. Let’s try to summarize a bit:

* I need to run a few Windows commercial applications (some I paid for!), and I hate the idea of dual-booting, hence I have to rely on WINE. I said that wine-1.1.31 in Ubuntu fails to run some of the applications that worked with my wine-1.1.26 under CentOS. No, I don’t run games, except for Rybka 3 Aquarium (that’s chess, folks). Now, I can also use wine-1.0.1 under Ubuntu (that’s one of the two official builds), and most applications would be happy… except for Rybka 3 Aquarium: once minimized, the window can’t be restored anymore. It’s quite a zugzwang—or is it a Catch-22?

* Broadcom wireless (with the STA hybrid driver, which works the best) is less stable under Linux than under Windows. Really.

* The Ubuntu retards can’t build packages that work.

Rest Here

Wow

Wow, Beranger, you make more comebacks then Cher (OK, so who won the betting pool on when he'd be back?).

And with a free Tumblr account (that's just sad).

Admit it, the voices in your head just won't quit, and the only way to pacify them is to blog.

Anywho, welcome back. Deranged or not, you're always a interesting read.

Oh thanks. Yeah, Steve Lake from raiden.net made that for me - last year actually, but I didn't get it up before the holidays. So, I wanted to make sure to put it up in time this year. I guess I'll let it run through New Years Day.

What I think is incredible

Is the generic comment that OOo is "horrendous" yet I am somehow able to get work done with it every day without any problems at all.

reports get written, spreadsheets get modified, etc...

This is for schools and small businesses, perhaps the most common users of this type of software.

I can only imagine the incredibly complex and out of the box work he must be trying to get done with his horrendous OOo.

What I think is incredible

Is that MS Office is so bloated, and so over-featured, I can't stand to use it. OOo lets me get what I need done fast. I'm more than happy with it.

Re: What I think is incredible

OOo Writer is certainly better for longer structured documents, and the integration of OOo Draw gives OOo Writer even more capability.

OOo Calc is now just as good as Excel.

OOo Impress is getting close to being as good as PowerPoint, but isn't quite there, yet.

I haven't tried OOoBase in a while, so I can't compare it to Access.

re: MS Office bloat

I use OOo, but I'm always amazed that even with the extreme feature bloat MS Office is WAAAAAAAAAAAAY faster then OOo.

Every time I start OOo I have to swear at it (and yes, I did all the tips on how to speed it up).

OOo should integrate the theme song (clicky) from Jeopardy and loop it several times while the app loads.

Hmmmmm.

OOo Writer - 4 seconds from launch click to ready to type on first launch on this laptop. Successive launches take less than a second due to quickstart caching.

The theme song from Jeopardy is 34 seconds, which is much longer than 4 seconds. Maybe MUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCH longer.

A comparison will seldom be fair

There's a reason for MS Office being fast on the Windows platform: it's giving higher priority than third party programs. You can hack this, something I've tested, and get pretty equally cold start performance between MS Office and OOo. It's very rare I nowadays work on a Windows desktop, except for administrating Windows servers, but a restart of OOo on Linux at least goes as fast as an application can start. At the moment I'm encoding some video, but still OOo cold start in 4 seconds (usually about 3). I don't think that's an issue.

Another tweak MS did on Vista and Windows 7 is to load the graphical interface even though the application itself isn't ready to be used. That's somehow off-topic, but it could be good to be aware of the illusions possible.

cold start

I have seen, on various disrtos that the first boot of OOo can be a bit long, although I personally haven't noticed to to be longer than any other office suite in my own experience.. Also, it is also my experience that successive starts of OOo are quicker than that first cold boot.

What works for some, may not work for others. everyone has certain expectations. some high, some low some that just look to getting what they need done, done in what that individual considers 'good enough' time and time definitely is relative.

Déjà vu

It's déjà vu all over again!

Will Béranger ever find an operating system that makes him happy, or is he doomed to spend the rest of his days in computing misery? Will there be starbursts and rainbows, or only gray skies and rain? Est-ce qu'il y aura une version troisième de la «Planète Béranger»? (Tu sais que tu veux.) Stay tuned!

re: Twitter

I would rather jam a steak fork into my eye (or watch pretty much any music video by Lady Gaga) then join twitter. So in that media, Berangers on his own.

HA

I'm with vonskippy on the Twitter issue

  • How to install go1.19beta on Ubuntu 22.04 – NextGenTips

In this tutorial, we are going to explore how to install go on Ubuntu 22.04 Golang is an open-source programming language that is easy to learn and use. It is built-in concurrency and has a robust standard library. It is reliable, builds fast, and efficient software that scales fast. Its concurrency mechanisms make it easy to write programs that get the most out of multicore and networked machines, while its novel-type systems enable flexible and modular program constructions. Go compiles quickly to machine code and has the convenience of garbage collection and the power of run-time reflection. • How To Install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9 - idroot

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install MongoDB on AlmaLinux 9. For those of you who didn’t know, MongoDB is a high-performance, highly scalable document-oriented NoSQL database. Unlike in SQL databases where data is stored in rows and columns inside tables, in MongoDB, data is structured in JSON-like format inside records which are referred to as documents. The open-source attribute of MongoDB as a database software makes it an ideal candidate for almost any database-related project. This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of the MongoDB NoSQL database on AlmaLinux 9. You can follow the same instructions for CentOS and Rocky Linux.

  • Self-host a Ghost Blog With Traefik

Ghost is a very popular open-source content management system. Started as an alternative to WordPress and it went on to become an alternative to Substack by focusing on membership and newsletter. The creators of Ghost offer managed Pro hosting but it may not fit everyone's budget. Alternatively, you can self-host it on your own cloud servers. On Linux handbook, we already have a guide on deploying Ghost with Docker in a reverse proxy setup. Instead of Ngnix reverse proxy, you can also use another software called Traefik with Docker. It is a popular open-source cloud-native application proxy, API Gateway, Edge-router, and more. I use Traefik to secure my websites using an SSL certificate obtained from Let's Encrypt. Once deployed, Traefik can automatically manage your certificates and their renewals. In this tutorial, I'll share the necessary steps for deploying a Ghost blog with Docker and Traefik.
