Ulteo Open Virtual Desktop 2.0 released
Gaël Duval, Mandrake Linux and Ulteo founder, has announced the availability of version 2.0 of the Ulteo Open Virtual Desktop (OVD). Ulteo is based on Debian and Ubuntu and allows users to run Linux and Microsoft windows applications from "any device" through a web browser. According to Ulteo, clients only need a Java enabled web browser to run the applications.
The latest open source Virtual Desktop infrastructure project release includes a number of new features, such as a new web portal mode. With it, launched applications will start in a dedicated browser window. Additionally, the web portal allows for application sharing and includes an embedded MP3 & FLV video player, so users can play multimedia files located in their home directory. Other notable features include authentication support for LDAP and CAS servers, support for Windows, WebDAV or Linux (Samba) file servers and compatibility with Amazon's EC2 virtualisation infrastructure.
