Should Ubuntu “Software-Store” Be Renamed?
Ubuntu Karmic Koala will see the first step of the much heralded package-management replacement named “Software Store” – whose name has caused a lot of controversy within the Ubuntu Community.
What’s in a name?
The development name for what we now know as the Ubuntu SoftwareStore was simply “AppCentre” – a name that was simple and self explanatory, but not “official”.
Upon the official naming of AppCentre to “SoftwareStore”, many users were left feeling muddled due to the term “store” having commercial associations. This fact is exemplified by the fact that, indeed, developers will be allowed to sell (as in for money) applications within the new framework by Ubuntu 11.04.

why
why do we need this...I wont buy anything off of it. Ubuntu people are not Mac/Apple people. Apple people have this motive and trend to try and get the coolest latest most expensive thing ever. Linux people are opposite. I wont bust my credit card out, ill find something equivalent that does the same job.
But then again, maybe this is a good idea for software teams to come in to the linux world and have an easy way to market and get their product easily accessible to the ubuntu community, which is the largest right now.
