Mandriva 2009.1
Mandriva 2009.1 was released earlier last month and I finally got round to testing it. Mandriva has always been a good distro in my eyes, being easy to use, quick and with plenty of eye-candy.
With these factors in mind, I downloaded the 2009.1 One KDE edition. The Live CD took a while to boot, and the installer took quite a while as well, but it was fairly easy to do, but had plenty of power behind it for those who want to tweak their systems a little more. On the Live CD, the distro picked up my wireless card and configured it for me, but on the first boot up from the hard disk, it did not, which was backwards.
The KDE4 desktop that Mandriva uses has been customised quite a bit, and uses a different menu to the standard KDE4 menu, more similar to the KDE3 one, but is easy to use and graphically pleasing.

Samsung, Red Hat to Work on Linux Drivers for Future TechThe metaverse is expected to uproot system design as we know it, and Samsung is one of many hardware vendors re-imagining data center infrastructure in preparation for a parallel 3D world. Samsung is working on new memory technologies that provide faster bandwidth inside hardware for data to travel between CPUs, storage and other computing resources. The company also announced it was partnering with Red Hat to ensure these technologies have Linux compatibility. |
