What Do Carrot Top and Ubuntu Have in Common
They’re both ugly, orange and annoying.
Ubuntu is a Linux distribution, a free alternative operating system, if you will. Those of you who consider yourself computer geeks already know this, the rest don’t care. I was always a Mac person until a few years ago, when the whole “Live CD” craze allowed regular guys like me to install Linux without any fear. But back then it was more just a curiosity, something I could install on my huge hard drive just because I could.
As a “hobbyist OS”, it was fine. I learned a lot about customization and found some of the free programs, like Avidemux, to be fantastic tools. (However, Avidemux works just as well in Windows, so this is not a comparative advantage.) It was somewhat instrumental in teaching me a fair amount about web development and installing LAMP stacks - I finally understood that chmod and rm -rf have the same effect on the desktop. As the OS for most web servers I’ve ever dealt with, Linux is just fine. But the reality is, it pretty much fails to cut it as a desktop operating system.
So where does the orange and annoying come in?
