Top 7 reasons people quit Linux? How about 7 reasons to try it
PC World’s Keir Thomas is (unintentionally) on the warpath again, this time with his Top 7 reasons why people quit Linux. In the post, Thomas refutes some of the concerns with several (what I think are ) somewhat tossed off comments.
Which brings me to my main complaint about Thomas’ approach, factual as it is: it just doesn’t address the fact that Linux is becoming more popular. In other words: if there are legitimate usability issues for the uninitiated, they must be addressed.
Look, Thomas is a smart cookie; no question about it. But the fundamental flaw in his approach — which I believe mirrors that of many users of Linux, particularly those who have been using it for a long time — is the exclusive club mentality.
You know: the “Linux is for us geeks, and if you can’t understand it, sod off” mindset. But recent “Jaunty” progress in the Linux arena means Linux is getting ever closer to being brought to the masses
