Linux and Sun events chopped as recession bites
It may be a popular Linux distro, but that's not enough to tempt fans of Ubuntu into traveling to the American northwest to get the latest low down.
Ubuntu Live, the O'Reilly Media run conference in Portland dedicated to all things Ubuntu, has been cancelled by organizers blaming insufficient pre-registration interest from users.
Sessions from the show will now be folded in to the O'Reilly Open Source Convention (OSCON) in July, which - itself - is being moved to San Jose, California - out of Portland. San Jose is in the heart of Silicon Valley, making it easier to reach and justify attending for many.
It's the latest IT event to be axed as companies cut their travel budgets and organizers trim the marketing budgets that usually fund such events.
Novell last month said it was cancelling its annual BrainShare, scheduled for March in Salt Lake City, Utah, saying customers and partners are under pressure to cut their costs.
The Linux company promised to announce replacement events and online activities this month.
