OSU celebrates success of Firefox
In order to celebrate 100 million downloads of Firefox, an open source Web browser distributed with the help of Oregon State University, a NASA weather balloon was launched from the Memorial Union Quad to about 100,000 feet at noon Saturday.
“We can legitimately say that all 100 million users went through Oregon State, so that’s a pretty big deal,” said Alex Polvi, a junior in computer science and a member of the Oregon State Linux Users Group.
From computers in the basement in Kerr Administration Building, OSU hosts the download page for Firefox, which is an alternative to Internet Explorer.
Firefox, which passed the 100 million download mark last week, has about 10 percent of the market share now, compared with about 1 percent two years ago.
