Giveaway celebrates open source
Free software is being distributed today at Waikato University to mark Software Freedom Day an annual international celebration of open source software.
Open source software, such as the Linux operating system, Open Office suite, Firefox web browser, Thunderbird email program, and Gimp photo editor, is written specifically to give away.
Free and open source software also extends to the network and database tools that power the internet, and many well-known sites such as Google, Wikipedia and WordPress are built on free software.
The event, hosted in S Block by the university's computer science department and the Waikato Linux User Group, will demonstrate the best free software available and CD Roms containing Ubuntu Live, an alternative operating system to Microsoft Windows, will also be handed out.
