Open minds on open source

When the IT industry talks innovation it doesn't talk with a single voice, a panel of experts agreed at the recent IBM Analysts Insights meeting in Brisbane. There's consensus, however, on one critical aspect of today's innovation landscape - and that's the shift away from the closed, internalised attitudes of the past, to a more open approach. This is characterised by collaborations, shared intelligence and the ability to unlock intellectual property.

Open standards play a critical role in this. Hugh Blemings, who manages the IBM Linux Technology Centre at OzLabs, in Canberra, says: "It's about adopting a new mind-set. It's about respecting the open source in a collegiate working environment.

"We ask what we can do with the technical features of Linux to drive it into the market. To this end we have a very astute group doing work on the kernel and collaborating closely with the processor people."
