Two thirds of senior IT staff expect an Open Source strategy
New research suggests that more than two thirds of the senior IT professionals questioned expect their companies to develop an Open Source strategy in the next five years, despite ongoing caution about the adoption of Open Source in the UK.
The survey, conducted for Atos Origin by the National Computer Centre, identified the key benefits of Open Source being reduced licensing costs, followed by flexibility and total cost of ownership.
The survey highlighted:
> Over 50% have either adopted or are planning to adopt Open Source
> Over 55% either accept or include Open Source in a tender
> Over 30% believe advice on technical strategy is the service that would assist them most with their adoption of Open Source
> Over 60% believe that Open Source will either increase its presence in certain business areas or be a fundamental component in core IT systems
> Over 73% expect Open Source to develop within their organisations' IT strategy over the next five years
Lack of long-term support was cited as the major inhibitor to adoption.
"In a climate where business value from IT investment is the driver, OS has already proved its viability with more IT professionals building Open Source into their IT strategies," said Michael Dean, Director for Membership at NCC. "Further competition in the marketplace will benefit everybody and continued encouraging actions from the Government will accelerate its adoption."
"The survey shows that adoption of Open Source is set to increase significantly over the next few years resulting in a new software industry landscape that offers companies more cost effective options," said Noomane Fehri, Atos Consulting. "Open Source is maturing fast, as are the business models that address the support issue and if companies prepare thoroughly, defining an Open Source adoption roadmap from the outset, tangible cost benefits can be realised in a very short time. For example, Atos Origin through its Atos Worldline offering which covers electronic transaction processing, implements and supports large, critical systems for leading blue chip companies, built purely on Open Source software."
Atos Consulting is providing technical strategy services to leading blue chip companies and public sector organisations across Europe to help them with their Open Source strategy.
The survey, which was conducted independently by The National Computing Centre, was compiled through over 140 web-based questionnaires completed by senior IT professionals.
