Open source all about free and freedom
As director of the California-based Linux Foundation, Jim Zemlin circles the globe proclaiming the virtues of open source software -- computer programs that are written collaboratively by developers all over the world, and are frequently given away free.
He's also the chief defender of attacks from Microsoft and other software companies, which allege that open source programs pilfer from proprietary software and expose open source users to legal liability.
The Linux computer operating system is the best-known open source program, providing a cheap, adaptable alternative to proprietary systems such as Microsoft Windows. It was created by a famously laid-back and extremely private Finnish software developer named Linus Torvalds, who moved to the Portland area in 2004 and now works for the Linux Foundation -- overseeing the operating system's development from his basement.
On Monday, Zemlin will be in downtown Portland to deliver the opening keynote address at the annual Government Open Source Conference, which explores ways governments can employ open source programs to cut their software costs and improve their technology.
